Frequently Asked Questions at the Brain Mapping Center
Find answers to the Brain Mapping Center's frequently asked questions.
What is neuropsychology?
Neuropsychology is the study of brain-behavior relationships and how neurological processes are expressed through behaviors, emotions, and actions. Neuropsychologists are doctors that are specially-trained in understanding these relationships. Most neuropsychologists use clinical tools (i.e., neuropsychological assessments) to highlight a patient’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses. For example, neuropsychologists are able to accurately measure an individual’s memory, attention, executive functioning, visuospatial, language, and other skills using these clinical tools. Ultimately, the neuropsychologist is able to provide the patient and their clinical team with functional recommendations based on the clinical findings that help a patient maximize their performance on everyday tasks.
A small percentage of neuropsychologists, which includes Dr. Tayim, are able to perform specialized in-patient neuropsychological procedures, including the intracarotid sodium amobarbital procedure (i.e., Wada test), and structural and functional neuroimaging.

What are neuropsychological tests?
Neuropsychological assessments are most similar to brain games and puzzles, and most often include paper-and-pencil and computer-based measures. To best estimate an individual’s neurocognitive functions, patients are administered many different types of tests, most often those of memory, attention, executive functioning, visuospatial, language, and sensory-motor skills. The assessment process is highly-individualized, meaning that the assessments administered are specific to the individual’s presenting problem(s).
When will I find out my results?
Results will be available in approximately 4 to 6 weeks after your appointment date. In many cases, results will be available before then. Patients may obtain copies of their neuropsychological evaluation through the Medical Records department at Miami Valley Hospital, upon proper authorization.
Will my doctor know my results?
The results of your neuropsychological evaluation will be automatically sent to your referring doctor at the Clinical Neuroscience Institute for treatment purposes. You do not need to sign a Release of Information (ROI). If you would like your results sent to a family member, doctor outside of the Premier Health group, or another individual, you will need to complete a Release of Information.
What should I expect after neuropsychological testing?
Because neuropsychological testing taps into many different brain functions, it is not uncommon for individuals to experience greater fatigue by the end of the testing day. We encourage all patients to have a full night’s sleep prior to the evaluation to ensure the best results, and the least amount of fatigue. For the patient’s comfort, they will be provided with multiple breaks throughout the evaluation.
