Neuropathy

Neuropathy is a disorder of the nerves caused by injury or disease. The damage to the nerves can cause pain or numbness, and each type of neuropathy is often classified by the disease that caused it.

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy occurs when there is damage to the peripheral nervous system, either by injury or disease. Damage can occur to the nerves in the skin, muscles, or internal organs. Because some neuropathies are associated with a disease, the condition is categorized by the medical problem that caused it. 

Symptoms of neuropathy include: 

• Burning or tingling sensations 
• Cramps 
• Dizziness when standing
• Loss of muscle control 
• Muscular weakness
• Numbness 
• Spasms

Diagnosing Neuropathy

Neuropathy is diagnosed by a review of one’s medical history, a physical examination, and certain tests. Electromyography (EMG) detects electrical activity in muscles, and a nerve conduction study measures electrical activity in nerves. If abnormalities are found, along with symptoms of neuropathy, these tests may help a physician diagnose the disorder.

Treatment for Neuropathy

Because neuropathy sometimes results from another disease, a physician may want to treat the primary medical condition first. The symptoms of neuropathy can be managed with medications, occupational and physical therapy, assistive devices, or nutritional modifications.
