Why is high blood pressure a concern during pregnancy?
The risks are the same for pregnant women as they are for non-pregnant individuals who have high blood pressure. You have the risk of stroke and the risk of heart problems and kidney problems. The problem is with the hormonal changes that come with pregnancy, high blood pressure can cascade and escalate uncontrollably if you're not careful. It can cause blood disorders because pregnant women have increased blood flow and blood volume, because they have a baby inside them. It can also cause liver dysfunction. These things can be potentially very dangerous during pregnancy if hypertension isn't well controlled.
