Why shouldn’t I use an urgent care as a replacement for visiting my primary care provider?

An urgent care should not be seen as a replacement for a PCP mostly due to the acute nature of illness that the urgent care cares for. Acute care is not a replacement for preventative care, which is generally what our PCPs in the network take care of.

Urgent care facilities are a great tool available in your health care toolbox. However, it’s important to visit urgent care facilities only when your primary care provider is unavailable, Premier Physician Network (PPN) physicians say.

Your primary care provider doesn’t just give you quick fixes for sicknesses and injuries. He or she knows your health history, provides preventive care, and can counsel you through personalized treatment and care plans as you need them.

Urgent care should be used only when necessary. Your primary care provider should be thought of as your medical home base.

Talk to your doctor for more information about why it’s important not to use an urgent care facility to replace your primary care provider.
