Atrium Medical Center Now Offers Heart Failure Remote Monitoring

Technology Offers More Proactive Option for Heart Failure Patients

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (June 20, 2022) – Atrium Medical Center offers a new way to manage heart failure and reduce hospitalizations with the CardioMEMS^TM HF System. This technology features a home monitoring unit and a permanently implanted device.

CardioMEMS^TM is a tiny wireless device implanted in a patient's pulmonary artery (PA). The home monitoring system contains a portable electronic unit and a special pillow with an antenna whose daily sensor readings determine elevated levels of pressure in a patient's pulmonary artery. If a patient’s PA pressure is too high, Atrium’s heart failure team is electronically notified and can intervene through medication adjustments and work with the patient on lifestyle changes before physical changes occur.

Clinical studies have shown patients with CardioMEMS^TM have fewer heart failure hospitalizations (readmissions may be reduced by up to 40 percent) and lower mortality. CardioMEMS^TM is not appropriate for all heart failure patients, including those with a history of recurrent pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and patients with other exclusionary health histories. However, the technology is especially beneficial to patients with past heart failure hospitalizations, high volumes of fluid in the lungs, and whose physical activity is limited.
