Premier Health Hospitals Awarded Stroke Certifications
DAYTON, Ohio (May 9, 2023) – Miami Valley Hospital South and Miami Hospital North have both received new stroke designations from The Joint Commission.
Miami Valley Hospital South has earned certification as a Primary Stroke Center, while Miami Valley Hospital North has become certified as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital.
Primary stroke center certification recognizes health care organizations that provide clinical programs across the continuum of care for stroke. The certification evaluates how organizations use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and their caregivers for discharge. Acute stroke ready hospitals, meanwhile, have dedicated stroke-focused programs.
Both hospitals underwent a rigorous, onsite review, during which a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“The Miami Valley Hospital family congratulates our stroke teams for their outstanding work in earning this important certification,” said Barbara Johnson, Premier Health’s chief operating officer and Miami Valley Hospital’s interim president. “This status recognizes that, no matter which Miami Valley Hospital campus you’re on, you can count on access to the expertise, teamwork, and technologies necessary to receive a more advanced level of stroke care.”
“Our stroke teams worked hard to reach this important milestone,” said Roberto Colón, MD, chief medical officer for Premier Health. “It requires a carefully coordinated, dedicated effort to ensure that these stroke program performance standards are met and maintained.”
