Patients who have an initial fragility fracture are usually referred to an orthopedic surgeon like me, because we're the ones who are involved in fixing bones. With hip fractures, there are several different ways to treat them depending on what type they are, but they usually require surgery in order to get patients up and moving to decrease complications. After that hip fracture occurs, then I think it's important that we have that conversation regarding what lifestyle and medication changes need to happen to keep a patient from having another fall and that second fragility fracture, which they're at a really high risk of having. And that usually includes some sort of lifestyle modification and medication.
