One thing that we can talk about with fall prevention is changing your home environment a little bit such as moving low lying furniture out of walkways or having a hall light or a night light on in the evenings. A lot of times you don't realize you left that box there or that a rug edge has turned up. Having some visual cues can really help decrease the risk of falls when getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Making sure rugs are secured with rug pads so they don't slip out from under you and then really just being careful about things like step stools, step ladders, since falls that take place from a little bit higher than standing height is a huge cause of fractures we see in the hospital. Positioning things a little bit lower and within reach can be really helpful in preventing those falls too.
