Trauma Surgery

Hi, I'm Mike Prayson.  I'm one of the orthopedic traumatologists here.

I have been practicing for about 18 years now and it's pretty much dedicated to musculoskeletal fracture care for bones that do well and heal, bones that don't do well and don't heal, crooked bones, deformed bones, infections of bones and things like that.  So, here at Miami Valley Hospital, we're one of 141 Level 1 trauma centers in the United States and we're one of probably a handful or more of Level 1 trauma centers in the state of Ohio. So, we serve a very important role here, where this institution provides that service to the community. 

We have developed a, a fairly comprehensive team and service. Generally, when someone shows up and has been injured, they're initially seen in the emergency room by either the emergency room doctors and/or by the general surgery trauma doctors, and then based on the injuries that they sustained, they'll get other doctors involved in consultation and, then those services get involved in that whole process.

The orthopedic trauma service, as we call it, is a fairly comprehensive service. Besides the nursing care that is dedicated to that area we also have, specialization in physical therapy that is geared toward orthopedic trauma care.  We have a number of resources in terms of social services and patient care advocates that help through the hospitalization, but more importantly, when patients leave the hospital and all the services they may have to require outside those social services help out quite a bit.

From an orthopedic standpoint, I am one of the busiest orthopedic surgeons here at the hospital and I think it's just a reflection of what I do. When you are involved in the trauma service and it's as busy as we are here, if you just take call at this institution, there is a fair amount of volume coming in, so it keeps you busy.
