If somebody develops arthritis in the midfoot, you're talking about the joints that make up your arch, right in the middle of your foot. If you notice, these joints aren't supposed to move a whole lot, and when they start moving too much, is when people develop pain. And, this can be, actually, easily solved surgically by going in and doing a fusion procedure. They don't have a need in that area for movement of the joints, therefore, there are not joint replacement options. The best option that we have is to go in and fuse those joints together. We go in, we take the joints out, we put plates and screws in, as needed, and you're off your foot for about eight weeks. And then, once the bone heals back together, much like a fracture would heal, and then we get you starting to walk, and gradually the pain subsides and goes away.
If you have a midfoot fusion, you will notice absolutely no loss of motion. You could still wear a high heel, or do just about anything you want to do.
