We've had some terrific leaders at Miami Valley Hospital over the last quarter of a century. I've been here for 30 years and experienced different styles of leadership and it took that because every step along the way, we need leaders to mold the organization for the environment that we’re facing. So I remember in the 80’s, when I first got here, we’re all adjusting to Medicare’s reimbursement model. It’s a fairly new model, it’s was built in 1983. So we were trying to understand that better and work with our doctors to provide the best and most cost effective care. As we progressed into the 90’s, we knew that our physical plants needed changing, so we really needed folks who had a special expertise on how to plan the campus. And interconnect all of our buildings and our technologies in a different way. Fast forward to today’s environment, we have to be very prepared for increasing the demand for outpatient service and catching that chronic disease or chronic illness early so it doesn’t fall into an acute phase of a problem that they need inpatient hospitalization. And that’s a real big mind shift, because as hospital administrators, filling the beds and providing inpatient care is what we were about. Now it’s much more of a mix of both strong ambulatory service, working with our primary care doctors and our physician specialists as well as providing wonderful in patient experiences.
I’m a compassionate leader that wants to make this organization and all of our hospitals affiliated with Premier, the leading organization to provide health in this community. I’m passionate about it, I work hard at it and develop followers behind me that say, “You know, this is the direction we want to go.”, and I, again wake up every morning thinking how lucky I am to be in that kind of position. We have, at Miami Valley Hospital, over 5,000 employees that work here, tending to the health and wellness of our community and it’s an honor to be able to lead that team.
Miami Valley Hospital is one of the leading employers in our community and from its start from a small house in downtown Dayton to a 3 million square foot organization and extensions in Centerville, Ohio and so forth. We have a huge impact, not only for the people that we employ, but all the others that do business with us. If you think about the vendors and contractors, construction workers, we have a significant impact on this community. Miami Valley Hospital and Premier Health in total, we’re one of the largest employers in this community. And this community relies on health care in general and more specifically the impact that Miami Valley and Premier Health has on it.
