During pregnancy, we never recommend weight loss. It's not thought to be the safest thing for the baby at this point. The recommendation for weight gain during pregnancy is about 10 to 20 pounds. As far as what diet is best during pregnancy, I wouldn't recommend any fad diet. I think a well-balanced diet that has the right amount of micro and macro nutrients, as anybody should be on during pregnancy, is going to be the best diet. The caloric numbers, the amount of calories recommended are going to be less. At our practice, we recommend that all women who are obese see a dietitian so they can come up with a customized diet plan which works best for her.
