The newest epilepsy treatment is the response stimulation implant system in the brain. It is not done in many centers but it's spreading. Instead of having to use a device that's on the outside and if you feel a seizure coming swiping the magnet, which is what happens with the vagal nerve stimulator, today you can feel a seizure coming and then use the magnet and hope to stop the seizure from aggressing. The system is implanted in the brain and so automatically will see a discharge building up in the brain, and can give a specific stimulus to the brain to stop that seizure.
There are still medications being tested. We have a lot of medications today that weren't available even ten years ago, and they continue to test new medications. There are more stimulus response systems that are being developed that are supposed to be more specific with less side effects. There was a study going on about whether laser treatment would be appropriate for some cases, and so that's being done in many centers rather than just standard surgery where something is opened up and taken out. Those are the main new things.
