If trauma or arthritis are not the cause of your neck pain, physical therapy could be your first step of treatment, to improve range of motion and stabilize and strengthen the muscles of the neck.
Physicians at Premier Orthopedic Spine Center say that other treatments may include:
- Trigger point injections of medicine into muscle and fascial (connective) tissue, to treat neck pain due to muscular causes.
- Epidural injections or injections in the facet joints (joints between the vertebrae of the spine), if your neck pain is caused by a pinched nerve (radiculopathy). These injections are done under X-ray guidance.
- Radiofrequency ablation, a pain management procedure, which burns the affected nerve fibers, if other treatments do not work.
Some patients may try chiropractic care. However, if balance issues are involved, chiropractic care should not be tried until after advanced imaging studies are conducted to identify the cause. Balance difficulties may indicate compression of the spine. Chiropractic adjustments could worsen the condition.
