From Damascus to Premier Health: Dr. Jehad Almasri’s Calling to Hematology

What is your clinical specialty? Hematology 

Where did you go to school? Damascus University, Faculty of Medicine, Damascus, Syria 

What brought you to Premier Health? A newer, fast-growing system where I have the great opportunity to help build the malignant hematology program. 

Why did you choose medicine as a career? Helping patients, breaking down their health problems to better help them understand the underlying disease, and walking them through the treatment journey are the main reasons to choose medicine and hematology.

Who are the people who influenced and/or mentored you? My research mentor at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Hassan Murad, always inspired me to be my best version of myself and never give up. 

My clinical mentor at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Bryan Hambley, taught me that everyone deserves the best care. 

My career mentor at the University of Utah Dr. Manni Mohyuddin, from whom I learned the essence of multiple myeloma treatment, and that I can be a great academic hematologist. 

What is one thing most people don’t know about you? I’m what you might call a selective perfectionist, but not the kind that beats himself up for invariably failing to live up to that standard. 

Where is your hometown? Damascus, Syria 

What, if any, sports team(s) do you cheer for? Not applicable  

What is the last book you read? “The Emperor of All Maladies” 

What is your favorite song in your playlist? “Fight Song” 

What is your favorite food? Soufflé  

What is your favorite hobby? Playing pickleball with the kids.  

What is your favorite animal, and why? Fish because they go through several obstacles in a fast and smooth way.

Where is your favorite vacation spot, and why? Smoky Mountains 

Describe something (a thing, person, place, experience, etc.) for which you are especially thankful: I am especially grateful for being in good health.
