Atrium Medical Center
Atrium Medical Center has been awarded a $46,200 grant from the Ohio Traffic Safety Office to support its collaboration with the Warren County Safe Communities Coalition. For 15 years, this funding has fueled campaigns promoting seatbelt use, impaired driving awareness, motorcycle safety, and youth driving education in partnership with law enforcement and community organizations.
On Nov. 5, Atrium welcomed Middletown City Schools teachers participating in the Workforce Institute, hosted by The Chamber of Commerce Serving Middletown, Monroe and Trenton. Educators explored entry-level health care roles and Premier Health’s academic programs for employees. Collaborating with Premier Health’s Learning Institute, teachers developed lesson plans emphasizing communication, critical thinking, and cultural awareness to prepare students for health care careers.
Atrium hosted 60 high school students for MedQuest on Nov. 19, a hands-on health care career exploration event. Students practiced suturing, analyzed CT scans, learned airway management techniques, and explored trauma care, occupational therapy, and CareFlight. Discussions with Premier Health’s workforce and talent acquisition teams provided guidance on career pathways in health care.
In other community relations activities, Premier Health sponsored Middletown’s Holiday Whopla, the West Chester-Liberty Chamber Alliance’s Women of Excellence Gala, and the Kiwanis Club of Middletown’s Pancake Day fundraiser. Atrium also donated first aid supplies for gift bags benefiting Franklin seniors and hosted Solvita’s monthly blood drive at the hospital.
Miami Valley Hospital
Miami Valley Hospital Foundation was awarded $423,149 by the OneOhio Recovery Foundation to support the continuation of the Substance Use Navigator (SUN) program. This vital program connects substance use disorder patients with evidence-based treatment options and wraparound services, providing them with a path toward recovery. The expansion of the SUN program into inpatient hospital settings represents a critical step forward in addressing the urgent needs of patients who may otherwise lack access to comprehensive care.
Good Samaritan Foundation-Dayton held its annual Rays of Hope breakfast at Sinclair Conference Center in Dayton. This year’s event supported Mothers Empowered, Samaritan Health Clinic, and Samaritan Behavioral Health, Inc. The featured speaker at Rays of Hope was Andre Harris, MD, chief medical officer, Miami Valley Hospital.
Miami Valley Hospital Foundation was awarded more than $193,000 from Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) to support the Promise to Hope program. This funding, provided through the Direct Opioid Settlement Grant, will strengthen efforts to identify substance use disorders among pregnant women in the community.
Miami Valley Hospital, Miami Valley Hospital North, and Miami Valley Hospital South have received the Pathway to Excellence® designation from the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Pathway designation is a global credential highlighting all Miami Valley Hospital campuses' commitment to creating a healthy work environment where nurses feel empowered and valued.
Miami Valley Hospital hosted the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Dayton group for its health care-focused day. Chad Whelan, MD, chief operating officer of Premier Health and president of Miami Valley Hospital, provided a comprehensive overview of the hospital and participants toured CareFlight, the Regional Adult Burn Center, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Whelan also participated in a panel discussion of health system leaders on Lessons in Leadership: Providing Acute Care for Today & Tomorrow.
Upper Valley Medical Center
Eight local food insufficiency agencies received donations from the UVMC Parent Board of Directors Community Benefit Fund in November to help support families in need in the Miami County community. Organizations receiving donation checks included New Path/Miami County; St. Patrick Soup Kitchen, Troy; First Place Food Pantry, Troy; Needy Basket of Southern Miami County, Tipp City; Meals On Wheels, Piqua; Bethany Center, Piqua; First Place Food Pantry, Troy; Piqua Salvation Army. UVMC’s Community Benefit Fund was established to support initiatives that help serve the health and wellness-related needs of the Miami County area.
The UVMC Foundation and the Dugan family hosted a reception for donors and friends on Nov. 18 in the Cancer Care Center to preview the infusion center’s expansion plans and highlight CareFlight’s new helicopter.
Jordan Grilliot, DO, orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician with Premier Orthopedics at UVMC, was interviewed on Troy Power 107 and WPTW radio stations to share information on the latest advancements in orthopedics at UVMC.
Several UVMC hospital departments hosted interactive booths at the annual Women in STEMM Expo hosted on Nov. 8 at Edison State Community College, attended by more than 400 female high school students from throughout our region.
In other community activities, UVMC was a sponsor of the Piqua Salvation Army Red Kettle Season Kickoff Luncheon held at the Piqua Country Club on Nov. 14, and UVMC leadership participated in a Miami County Park District planning for the future focus group on Nov. 19.
Congratulations to Kylie Borgerding, Occupational Therapist, for receiving a Great Catch Award at UVMC. This award acknowledges an individual who makes a great catch in recognizing and escalating a potentially unsafe patient situation.
Also recognized in November were Erika Hicks, LPN on One Central, who received the Daisy Nursing Award and speech therapist Ron Stang, MS, CCC-SLP, who received the Everyday Hero Award.

On Oct. 18, the Clinical Neuroscience Institute’s (CNSI’s) new Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic at Miami Valley Hospital South saw its first patient. The clinic is designed to enhance the quality of care for ALS patients by providing comprehensive services under one roof in a supportive, family-oriented atmosphere. The clinic features a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including a fellowship-trained neuromuscular physician, neurologic advanced practice providers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, dietitians, respiratory therapists, and social workers. An ALS United Ohio social worker also serves as a team member, working directly with patients and connecting them with organizational resources.
Congratulations to Paul Krebs, MD, who ran his first marathon on Nov. 3. He finished 255th out of 55,000 participants at the 2024 New York City Marathon! Dr. Krebs participates in Premier Health's Running Medicine and Performance Program.
