Premier Health First in the Midwest to Offer Magellan™ Robotic Catheter System

New cutting-edge robotic system used to treat patients with peripheral vascular disease. Technology based at Miami Valley Hospital.

DAYTON, OH (January 8, 2014) - Premier Health announced today that it has received two Magellan Robotic Catheter Systems, which are located at Miami Valley Hospital. One system will be used clinically for cutting-edge intravascular procedures.  The second will be housed at the Brethen Center for Surgical Advancement in Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery, and will be used for research and training.

This leading-edge technology, made possible by the Robert H. Brethen Foundation, establishes Miami Valley Hospital as the first site in the Midwest to acquire the Magellan Robotic System, and only the fourth Center of Excellence designation from Hansen Medical in the United States.

The Hansen Magellan Robotic System is FDA-cleared for use in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease, a condition that affects millions of Americans. Further, the Magellan robot is a platform technology that will expand into a wide variety of therapeutic vascular treatments involving women’s and men’s health and coronary disease. This technology assists the physician with navigation of the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain, so therapeutic devices, such as stents, can be placed with greater predictability.  The system can be used during simple or complex procedures, and has been used in patients in the US and Europe since its introduction.

“It is a pleasure to continue to help Miami Valley Hospital provide enhanced, innovative medical care,” Mr. Brethen said. “As the only hospital in the Midwest to acquire the Magellan Robot System, we continue to improve treatment options available to everyone in southwest Ohio and beyond.  I want patients to know that this new form of surgery is available right here in Dayton, Ohio, at Miami Valley Hospital.”  Mr. Brethen added, “We are very proud that the training provided at the Brethen Center will help expand this technology for patients across the country.”

Jim Pancoast, president and chief executive officer of Premier Health, said “By becoming only the fourth training facility in the United States, Miami Valley Hospital is positioned to offer not only the most advanced technology for our patients, but also training for other physicians and medical staff members, so that they then can take their new-found expertise into their communities.  We continue to lead the way in patient care, teaching, and research.”

Medical personnel from across the Midwest will travel to The Brethen Center at Miami Valley Hospital for training.

“We are pleased that the Brethen Foundation and Hansen Medical have seen the commitment and skill of the physicians at Miami Valley Hospital,” said Thomas Thornton, MD, chair of the Premier Health Heart and Vascular Institute.“It is an honor to be able to treat our patients at the highest level, and train other physicians to do the same.  Our expansion will allow us to care for more patients and to offer new services for patients in need of endovascular procedures.”

“Miami Valley opened the Brethen Center for Surgical Advancement in Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery a little over a year ago to assist in training physicians on how to use surgical robotic technology,” said Mark Shaker, president and chief executive officer of Miami Valley Hospital.  “Mr. Brethen’s most recent donation allows us to go even further in our training, and we are very appreciative of his interest in providing a robotic training site right here in Dayton.”
