Fast Breast MRI
Premier Health offers Fast Breast MRI, a 10-minute self-pay examination. Women with dense breasts or at a higher risk for breast cancer can now choose Fast Breast MRI at Premier Health as a second step (following a mammogram) for breast cancer screening. It’s important to note that Fast Breast MRI isn’t a replacement for an annual mammogram.
Why Choose Fast Breast MRI?
Fast Breast MRI may increase the accuracy of breast cancer screening in women with dense breasts. For women with dense breasts, the sensitivity of mammography decreases from 84 percent to 25 to 50 percent, which can lead to a later breast cancer diagnosis. A later cancer diagnosis can lead to increased tumor size and a worse prognosis. Women with other elevated breast cancer risk factors may also benefit from Fast Breast MRI, including those who cannot tolerate a traditional full breast MRI due to the exam’s length, which is typically an hour.
According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly half of all women age 40 and older who get mammograms are found to have dense breasts. Their mammograms can be harder to read, and they may be called back for follow-up tests more often.
If you’re considered high risk for breast cancer, annual breast MRI is typically covered by insurance and is the recommended procedure. If a full breast MRI is not covered by your insurance, talk to your provider about whether you may benefit from Fast Breast MRI.
Schedule Your Fast Breast MRI
Fast Breast MRI is a new exam and currently not covered by insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid. The self-pay cost is $400, and a physician referral from your primary care provider or breast imaging specialist is required. Talk with your provider about whether a Fast Breast MRI screening is right for you.
Once you have a physician’s order, choose from three convenient ways to schedule:
- Schedule in MyChart whenever it’s convenient for you.
- Call us to schedule at (855) 887-7364(855) 887-7364. Call us Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What To Expect During Your Fast Breast MRI Screening
Fast MRI breast screening requires an injection of contrast that is given through an IV. The study will be interpreted by a specially trained breast radiologist, and the results will be sent to your doctor. You will need a doctor’s order for this exam.
