Madison’s Story: Moving On From Missed Stop Sign
Madison Seiferid, a University of Cincinnati student, was riding in a car on her way home to Indiana for a festival. But in Clark County, Ohio, the sun blinded the driver of another car, causing him to miss a stop sign. His car struck the passenger side of the car Madison was in. Upon collision, the driver’s iPhone called 911, help arrived in minutes, and Madison was CareFlighted to Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center.
When the Pike Township Fire Department squad arrived on the scene, Madison was unresponsive and had to be extricated. She suffered serious injuries to the right side of her chest and had blood accumulating in her chest cavity. The CareFlight crew put in a breathing tube to help her breathe and gave her warmed whole blood.
Once at the hospital, Madison underwent emergency surgery to stabilize her abdominal injuries. In the ICU she was resuscitated and monitored, with more surgeries to follow, including surgery to plate rib fractures and repair a pelvic fracture. CT scans revealed that she also had significant brain injury and bleeding in the brain. A monitor was inserted to track pressure on her brain. To help regain function, Madison completed inpatient physical and occupational therapy. After completing outpatient rehabilitation in August 2024, she returned to her college studies.
