Rob’s Story: Grateful for Coordinated Care
In the fall of 2022, Springfield Fire Department firefighter and paramedic Rob Baise was on shift responding to a structure fire. Conditions deteriorated, and the crew needed to evacuate. While evacuating the house, Rob fell face first down a flight of stairs. Unable to move his extremities, Rob did his best to call for help. Fortunately, help arrived, and he was taken immediately to Springfield Regional Medical Center.
CareFlight was called to fly Rob to Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center. Trauma surgeon Cathline Layba, MD, and the trauma team were concerned Rob had a spinal cord injury, so they called in Norah Foster, MD, orthopedic spine surgeon, for her assessment. Following spinal cord surgery, Rob recovered and is back to work as a firefighter.
