High-Risk Pregnancy
It is every parent’s wish to have a healthy child. Sometimes, in order to achieve that happy ending, some expectant mothers may have to take a few extra steps in their journey. A health-related issue may present itself during your pregnancy and we may determine your pregnancy to be “high-risk” and require some extra special monitoring, testing, and care.
With the physical changes already occurring in your body, this diagnosis can add an extra level of emotional strain. But, please feel confident that the Lifestages physicians and midwives are specifically trained to recognize any warning signs in advance and treat high-risk pregnancies skillfully.
Specific factors that might contribute to a high-risk pregnancy include your age, lifestyle, medical history, and chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and epilepsy. You may also face additional risks with physical complications that present themselves during your pregnancy. Mothers who are overdue or having twins or other multiples can also face some challenges.
Whether you know ahead of time that you’ll have a high-risk pregnancy or you simply want to prevent a high-risk pregnancy, consider these actions:
- Schedule an appointment before you conceive to see if any special treatment is needed to prepare you for pregnancy.
- Seek regular prenatal care so we can closely monitor your progress.
- Eat a healthy diet, rich in folic acid, calcium, iron, and other nutrients.
- Gain weight wisely, working with us to establish your ideal weight for pregnancy.
- Avoid smoking, alcohol, and illegal drugs. Consult your doctor about any other medications.
We understand you may have questions about your high-risk pregnancy and we’d be glad to answer them. Please contact us to set up an appointment.
