Education And Support
We want to help you access all of the care and services you need to aid your healing process. If you have prostate cancer, here are some services that may benefit you:
- An oncology nurse navigator who knows a great deal about the needs of people with prostate cancer will be available to listen to you, answer your questions, and help you understand next steps in your treatment. Your navigator also will find resources for you and your family as you move through diagnosis, treatment, and beyond. Your navigator and care team members will partner to provide support for you every step of the way.
- Premier Health’s Cancer Genetic Counseling Program provides a comprehensive risk assessment for hereditary cancer. With a simple blood test, we help determine whether the cancer in someone’s family is hereditary. If the cancer is hereditary, our genetic counselors can make personalized recommendations for ongoing care.
- Our free Prostate Cancer Support Groups offer speakers on a variety of topics, support, and group discussion about living with prostate cancer or recovering from treatment. Family members and friends are welcome. One group meets the second Monday of each month, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Miami Valley Hospital North, Rehab Gym Conference Room (call for directions or ask at the Rehab Center front desk). A second group meets the third Thursday of the month, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Miami Valley Hospital South, Conference Room A. Call (937) 459-4230(937) 459-4230 for more information.
- Collaborations of Hope Cancer Care Support Group offers support to all people whom cancer affects. No matter your specific disease site, whether you are currently undergoing treatment, or you are a survivor or a caregiver, you are welcome to attend this program. The group meets the second Wednesday of the month at 4 p.m. at Miami Valley Hospital South Comprehensive Cancer Center, Tree of Hope Room, on the second floor. For more information, call (937) 438-7880 (937) 438-7880.
- Our Oncology Exercise Program at Miami Valley Hospital South includes special classes for men in every phase of their prostate cancer journey, including treatment, recovery, and survivorship. Taught by an exercise physiologist and registered nurse, our free classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at a variety of times in the Wellness Center. We start with an initial assessment and physical fitness testing. We ask about your individual goals and create an individualized treatment plan that incorporates a variety of aerobic exercises, strength training, balance, and stretching. The group classes provide guided exercise in a friendly, fun atmosphere. We require a physician referral to participate, but if you call us directly, we can reach out to your physician. For more information, call (937) 438-5483(937) 438-5483.
